The Hidden Costs of Heatwaves on Farm Animals

As heatwaves become more frequent in the UK, the impact on farm animals is often overlooked. While discussions focus on agricultural productivity, the suffering of animals during extreme temperatures is a significant concern. The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 mandates that animals be treated as sentient beings, yet current policies largely ignore their welfare, framing animal deaths as mere economic losses.

During recent heatwaves, reports indicated that millions of birds died in France due to extreme heat, highlighting the urgent need for better animal welfare considerations in farming practices. In the UK, pigs and poultry begin to suffer at temperatures above 27°C, with serious health risks emerging as temperatures rise further.

The Met Office warns that UK temperatures could reach 45°C by 2056, necessitating a shift in how the government approaches climate adaptation in agriculture. This means prioritising animal welfare alongside economic factors, ensuring that the well-being of livestock is not sacrificed for profit.

As communities adapt to climate change, it is vital to recognise that the implications of heatwaves extend beyond human discomfort, affecting the lives of millions of sentient beings on farms. A comprehensive approach to climate adaptation must include robust animal welfare policies to mitigate suffering and ensure ethical farming practices.
