The Hidden Dangers of Squishy Toys: A Growing Concern for Parents

A troubling trend has emerged where children are heating squishy toys in microwaves, leading to severe injuries. Experts warn that this practice can cause the toys to explode, releasing hot gel that can stick to skin and result in serious burns. The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow has reported treating six children for such injuries in just eight months, with some requiring skin grafts.

One notable case involved eight-year-old Joseph, who suffered burns after a squishy toy burst on him. His mother expressed shock, stating they never anticipated that he would microwave a toy. This incident highlights a critical gap in parental awareness regarding the dangers of these toys, which are often marketed as safe and fun.

The injuries from these toys can be particularly severe due to the nature of the gel inside, which retains heat and can cause prolonged burns. Medical professionals are urging parents to discuss these risks with their children, as the trend continues to grow online, often fueled by viral videos.

As the popularity of squishy toys rises, so does the potential for harm. Parents are advised to monitor their children’s toy usage closely and educate them about the dangers of heating toys, ensuring that safety takes precedence over trends.
