These facilities, which run continuously to support online services, are projected to double their electricity consumption by 2030, potentially straining local power grids and increasing reliance on fossil fuels.
In cities like Dublin and Frankfurt, data centers already consume a significant portion of the local electricity supply, leading to saturation of the grid and delaying new connections. This growing demand is not only contributing to greenhouse gas emissions but also prolonging the life of coal plants, which emit millions of tons of CO2.
Moreover, the cooling systems required for these data centers use vast amounts of water, with some facilities consuming millions of gallons daily. This can overwhelm local water treatment systems and exacerbate urban heat effects, raising temperatures in surrounding areas and increasing energy demands for air conditioning.
While there are more sustainable cooling methods and opportunities for renewable energy integration, the current trajectory of data center expansion poses serious challenges for urban infrastructure and public health, highlighting the urgent need for more efficient practices in this rapidly growing sector.
