Hidden Fees: The Costly Surprise of Holiday Amenities

A couple’s recent holiday experience highlights the hidden costs associated with hotel amenities. After booking an all-inclusive stay at the Jaal Riad Resort in Marrakech, they were shocked to discover hefty fees for using the pool and spa facilities, which were not clearly disclosed during the booking process. The couple planned to enjoy the pool regularly, but the additional £350 cost for access forced them to reconsider their plans.

This situation raises important questions about transparency in holiday bookings. Many consumers may not realise that hotels often advertise amenities prominently while omitting crucial details about potential extra charges. Such practices can significantly inflate the overall cost of a holiday, leading to frustration and disappointment for travellers.

Consumer rights advocate Gary Rycroft points out that under the new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, businesses are required to disclose material information that could influence a consumer’s decision. The lack of clarity in this case may not only be misleading but could also be unlawful.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s essential for travellers to scrutinise the fine print before booking. Understanding the full cost of amenities can help avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure a more enjoyable holiday experience.
