Low-emissivity (low-E) windows are praised for their energy efficiency, keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer. However, a little-known risk associated with these windows is their potential to ignite fires in neighbouring properties. This occurs when the windows, particularly if they are slightly bowed, focus sunlight like a magnifying glass, creating intense heat spots.
Instances have been reported where this concentrated heat has scorched wooden decks, melted synthetic grass, and even caused fires. One homeowner experienced three fires in a week due to their neighbour’s newly installed low-E windows, prompting them to relocate a propane tank away from the danger zone.
While architects are aware of the dangers posed by curved glass in larger buildings, the risks in domestic settings are less obvious. Poorly manufactured low-E windows can inadvertently become fire starters, leading to significant property damage and safety concerns.
As the popularity of energy-efficient technologies grows, homeowners and builders must be vigilant about the potential hazards of low-E windows. Understanding these risks is essential for ensuring safety and preventing costly incidents in residential areas.
