In a groundbreaking achievement, three women claimed the top spots at the Rasselbock Backyard Ultra in Derbyshire, marking the first all-female podium in the UK for this type of ultra-marathon. The event, held at the Hardwick Estate, saw competitors running a challenging 4.16-mile course every hour until only one remained. With 141 participants, women made up just 21% of the field, yet their performance was historic.

Becky Atkinson, who won the race, completed an impressive 40 hours of continuous running, covering 166.4 miles. This achievement not only highlights the growing presence of women in endurance sports but also raises questions about gender performance in ultra-distance events. Research suggests that as distances increase, the performance gap between men and women narrows significantly, with women potentially excelling in longer races.

The significance of this event extends beyond the podium. It showcases a shift in the ultra-running community, where female participation is gaining momentum. The Hardwick Estate, historically linked to powerful women like Bess of Hardwick, adds a cultural layer to this achievement, symbolising women’s strength and endurance.

As more women take on ultra-marathons, this could inspire future generations to participate in endurance sports, challenging traditional gender norms in athletics. The implications of this event may encourage more inclusive practices in sports, fostering an environment where female athletes can thrive and be celebrated for their accomplishments.
