Known as ‘The Great Parterre,’ this ornamental garden was originally commissioned by William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Devonshire, around 1699. This phenomenon, previously observed during the 2022 heatwave, highlights the impact of climate conditions on historical landscapes. The Chatsworth Estate has recorded exceptionally high temperatures this year, with peak readings exceeding 30°C in May, June, and July. The estate’s weather monitoring indicates a significant increase in sunshine hours and a notable decrease in rainfall, contributing to the drought conditions affecting much of England.

This includes enhancing organic matter in the soil to mitigate the effects of future droughts.
