A Tudor mansion built with stone from Caerphilly Castle has been renovated and is now on the market for £1.5 million. Originally constructed in 1583, Y Fan fell into disrepair over the years, described as damp and mouldy by 2017. A couple from London, seeking a slower lifestyle, purchased the property for £750,000 and embarked on a significant restoration project in 2018.

Despite having no prior renovation experience, they faced numerous challenges, including high ceilings and 132 windows needing refurbishment. Their goal was to transform the mansion into a bed and breakfast, which they finally opened in May 2021 after delays due to the Covid pandemic. The couple invested considerable effort into reviving the historic property, which is now a testament to its rich heritage.

The mansion’s unique history adds to its appeal, as it was built using materials from a significant local landmark. The couple hopes to pass on the property to someone with the energy to continue its legacy in hospitality. This sale not only marks the end of their journey but also highlights the potential for historic properties to be revitalised and appreciated anew.

As they prepare to sell, the couple reflects on their transformative experience, noting the hard work involved in running a hospitality business. The listing price reflects both the extensive renovations and the historical significance of the mansion, making it an attractive opportunity for buyers interested in heritage properties.
