Historical Beaches Now Migrant Launchpads

Five beaches in northern France, once defended by British troops during WWII, are now being exploited by people smugglers as launch points for migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. This shift in tactics comes as French authorities intensify crackdowns on illegal crossings from more heavily monitored areas like Dunkirk and Calais.

The beaches, including Calais and Fécamp, have become increasingly attractive to smugglers due to their proximity to the UK. As police efforts tighten, smugglers have adapted by launching boats from further south, with Fécamp marking a new record for the furthest launch point.

The historical significance of these locations cannot be overlooked; they were pivotal during Operation Dynamo, where British forces evacuated troops from Dunkirk in 1940. Today, these same shores are witnessing a different kind of peril, as migrants risk their lives in small boats to reach Britain.

This evolving situation highlights a troubling irony: the very beaches that once symbolised bravery and sacrifice are now sites of desperation and illegal activity, raising questions about border security and the effectiveness of current policies to manage migration across the Channel.
