Households Cash In on Solar Power Amid Heatwave

British households have collectively earned nearly £100 million from exporting surplus solar energy over the past year. This surge in earnings, averaging £244 per home, comes as the country experiences extreme heat, driving up demand for solar energy. With 825 GWh of power supplied to the grid, this amount is comparable to the annual output of a gas plant.

The rise in solar energy production is significant not just for individual households but also for the UK’s energy landscape. As more homes adopt solar technology, reliance on fossil fuels decreases, contributing to a more secure and sustainable energy system. The increase in solar installations, particularly batteries that store energy for resale, has seen a staggering 630% rise compared to last year.

Despite the benefits, challenges remain. The intermittent nature of solar energy means that gas still plays a crucial role in maintaining supply, especially during periods of low sunlight. This was highlighted during a recent solar eclipse, which temporarily reduced solar output by 1.2 GW without disrupting overall energy supply.

As the government pushes for a greener future, the expansion of solar energy is viewed as essential for achieving net-zero targets. However, the growth of large solar farms has sparked local disputes, raising questions about land use and the impact on rural landscapes. The ongoing heatwave is likely to further accelerate interest in solar solutions as households look to maximise their energy independence.
