The Human Fridge: A New Solution for Extreme Heat

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, innovative solutions are emerging to combat the rising temperatures. One such invention is the ‘Do Hiemon,’ a personal cooling booth designed to chill users in just 10 minutes. This 2.1-metre-high stainless-steel structure cools the air inside to a brisk 15°C, providing a refreshing escape from the sweltering heat.

While traditional air conditioning systems can be costly and energy-intensive, the human fridge operates at a mere 7p per hour, making it a more economical option for cooling. However, the initial investment of around £6,900 raises questions about accessibility and practicality for everyday consumers.

The potential benefits of this technology extend beyond personal comfort. For workplaces exposed to extreme heat, such as warehouses and factories, the human fridge could be a lifesaver, reducing the risk of heat exhaustion among workers. Public installations could also provide relief for those feeling unwell in hot weather.

As climate change continues to escalate, the emergence of such technologies highlights a critical choice: invest in innovative cooling solutions or focus on long-term sustainability efforts. The human fridge may not be the ultimate answer, but it underscores the urgent need for effective responses to our increasingly hot climate.
