Hungary’s Child Protection Law Amendments: A Shift in Policy

Hungary’s Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced amendments to the controversial child protection law, which has faced criticism for its discriminatory provisions against LGBTQ+ individuals. Originally adopted in 2021, the law aimed to protect minors but was later amended to restrict the depiction of homosexuality, leading to significant backlash from both domestic and international communities.

The European Court of Justice ruled in April that the law violated EU principles by treating LGBTQ+ people as societal threats. In response, Magyar’s proposed changes aim to remove discrimination while still focusing on protecting children from violent and sexual content. This shift could potentially ease tensions with the EU and avoid hefty fines imposed on Hungary for previous legal breaches.

Moreover, these amendments are seen as a strategic move to unlock substantial EU funding, which could amount to half a billion euros for educational support. This funding is crucial for Hungary, especially as the new government seeks to restore relations with the EU and NATO after years of isolation under Viktor Orbán’s administration.

Additionally, Magyar’s government plans to relax adoption restrictions for same-sex couples, further indicating a shift towards more inclusive policies. The proposed amendments are set to be presented to parliament, marking a significant moment in Hungary’s legislative landscape and its relationship with the European Union.
