Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar is swiftly dismantling the legacy of former leader Viktor Orban through a series of significant reforms aimed at combating corruption and restoring democratic integrity. This initiative, dubbed ‘Operation Purgatory,’ seeks to address the systemic issues that allowed Orban’s regime to flourish, including the manipulation of state institutions and the media.
One of the most pressing actions taken by Magyar’s government is the abolition of public interest asset management foundations, which were established under Orban to transfer public assets into private hands. This move is crucial for recovering billions that were misappropriated and is seen as a vital step toward ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.
Additionally, the new administration is enhancing the powers of the Integrity Authority and tightening asset declaration rules for politicians, addressing the corruption that plagued Orban’s tenure. These reforms are not only symbolic but also practical, as they pave the way for the release of approximately €17 billion in EU funding that was previously frozen due to concerns over corruption.
As Magyar’s government continues to implement these changes, the focus remains on preventing a return to Orban’s ‘mafia system.’ By establishing a more transparent and accountable political environment, Hungary aims to restore trust in its institutions and align more closely with EU standards, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
