Inclusive Water Sports: Breaking Barriers for All

The Mae Murray Foundation is transforming access to water sports for people with disabilities in Northern Ireland. By introducing adapted paddleboards and creating inclusive beaches, they are enabling individuals like Naomi Herron, who has cerebral palsy, to enjoy activities that were previously out of reach. Naomi’s campaign for accessible beaches has led to the establishment of six inclusive locations, allowing her and others to experience the joy of being in the water alongside family and friends.

The foundation’s innovative approach includes specialized paddleboards with various seating options, ensuring that everyone can participate safely. This initiative not only fosters a sense of community but also promotes physical and mental well-being. Participants report feelings of freedom and joy, highlighting the profound impact these activities have on their lives.

Families are also benefiting, as seen with Kelvin Kasapatu and his son Oscar, who found joy in paddleboarding together. The sessions provide opportunities for bonding and shared experiences, breaking down the isolation often faced by families with disabled members. The foundation’s efforts are making a significant difference in the lives of many, enhancing their quality of life.

As the Mae Murray Foundation continues to expand its offerings, the hope is to reach even more individuals and families, providing them with the chance to enjoy the water. This initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in recreational activities, paving the way for a more accessible future for all.
