India’s Coal Expansion: A Global Concern

India’s recent surge in coal mine proposals has significant implications for global energy dynamics. Despite a plateau in worldwide coal demand, new projects could increase global coal supplies by 2.5 billion tonnes annually, raising alarms about the future of fossil fuels.

The states of Odisha and Jharkhand are at the forefront of this expansion, doubling their proposals to meet rising electricity demands driven by economic growth and climate-related heatwaves. This ambitious plan contradicts the global trend towards renewable energy, as wind and solar power have recently surpassed coal generation in the electricity mix.

The Global Energy Monitor highlights that while new coal projects have slowed globally, India’s actions could lock in decades of coal production, undermining climate goals. With the International Energy Agency predicting a decline in coal demand by the end of the decade, the timing of India’s coal expansion raises critical questions about energy policy and environmental sustainability.

As the world shifts towards cleaner energy, India’s coal strategy may hinder progress and exacerbate climate challenges. The economic rationale for expanding coal mining is diminishing, and there is an urgent need for governments to reconsider these projects before they advance to construction.
