India’s Proposed Church Seizures Raise Global Concerns

India’s Hindu government is facing backlash over proposed legislation that could allow it to seize churches and other religious institutions. The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill aims to empower local authorities to take control of foreign contributions to organisations whose registrations are cancelled. This move has been labelled a direct attack on Christians, raising alarms among international observers, particularly in the US.

The implications of this legislation extend beyond religious freedom; it could disrupt the funding and operations of numerous NGOs and educational institutions reliant on foreign donations. With over 14,000 active FCRA certificates, many organisations could find themselves vulnerable to government intervention, fundamentally altering the landscape of civil society in India.

Critics argue that this bill undermines India’s democratic values and could strain diplomatic relations with countries that support religious freedoms. Republican Congressman Riley Moore has voiced concerns that this could be a significant point of contention in US-India relations, given the historical presence of Christianity in India.

As the Indian government prepares to introduce this bill in Parliament, the potential for widespread impact on religious and civil liberties is becoming increasingly clear. The international community is watching closely, as the outcome could redefine the balance between state authority and religious rights in India.
