Indonesia’s New Aircraft Carrier: A Costly Ambition or Strategic Necessity?

Indonesia has welcomed its first aircraft carrier, the former Italian warship ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, amid heated debates over its cost and purpose. While the government claims it will enhance maritime security and disaster response, critics question the financial implications of refurbishing an ageing vessel in a time of economic strain.

The acquisition, costing an estimated $450 million, raises concerns about whether Indonesia truly needs an aircraft carrier. Critics argue that funds could be better allocated to more pressing military needs, such as submarines and frigates, especially as the nation faces fiscal pressures and slowing economic growth.

Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto envisions the carrier as a mobile command centre for disaster relief, capable of deploying helicopters and drones. However, experts warn that operating such a vessel is expensive and may not align with Indonesia’s strategic priorities, which focus on protecting territorial waters rather than projecting power.

As Indonesia positions itself as a maritime nation, the decision to invest in an aircraft carrier could reflect aspirations for national prestige. Yet, the long-term sustainability of this investment remains uncertain, prompting calls for transparency and careful consideration of operational needs versus national pride.
