In Berkshire, scientists are pioneering indoor farming techniques that could revolutionise agriculture. By growing crops in sealed environments without sunlight or soil, they aim to tackle the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity. This innovative approach uses vertical aeroponic beds and artificial intelligence to optimise growth conditions, significantly reducing water usage by 98% compared to traditional farming methods.

The controlled environment allows for year-round crop production, which is particularly crucial during drought conditions. Researchers can manipulate humidity, temperature, and nutrient levels to ensure optimal growth, making it possible to cultivate crops even when external conditions are unfavourable. This adaptability could change how food is produced in the UK, especially as climate variability increases.

However, this method has faced criticism for its limited crop variety and high energy demands. A recent report highlighted that while advancements have been made, the focus has largely been on leafy greens and herbs. Yet, the industry is evolving, with soft fruits and protein crops now becoming viable options.

As AI technology continues to develop, its role in agriculture is expected to expand. By predicting how changes in care affect yields, farmers can respond swiftly to potential issues, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in food production. This shift towards high-tech farming could reshape the future of agriculture in the UK, addressing both environmental and food security concerns.
