Spanish researchers have developed a groundbreaking technology that allows plants to glow in the dark and change colour when infected by viruses. This innovation enables early detection of crop pests and diseases, potentially transforming agricultural practices. By emitting different light signals based on their health, these plants can alert farmers to infections before visible symptoms appear, which is crucial for timely intervention.

The system relies on transgenic plants modified with fungal bioluminescence genes. When healthy, these plants emit a constant yellow light. However, upon infection, a change in the emitted light colour signals the presence of pathogens. This method is not only cost-effective but also simplifies the monitoring process, as it can be detected using standard cameras.

Traditional diagnostic methods for plant diseases often require specialised equipment and trained personnel, making them less accessible for everyday farmers. In contrast, this new approach could democratise disease detection, allowing for quicker responses to outbreaks and potentially reducing crop losses.
