Inquest Reveals Natural Causes Behind Murderer’s Death in Prison

Michael Heighton, convicted of murder in 2009, died in prison from natural causes, as confirmed by an inquest. Heighton, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Karen Leonard, faced significant health issues exacerbated by alcohol abuse. His death at age 65 in December 2024 raised questions about the adequacy of healthcare provided to inmates.

The inquest revealed that Heighton had been receiving palliative care and had deteriorated significantly in the months leading up to his death. Concerns were raised regarding his treatment in prison, particularly regarding his weight and the presence of pressure sores. However, investigations concluded that the care he received was appropriate and in line with his medical needs.

Dr. Louise Mulcahy, a pathologist, determined that Heighton died from pneumonia, infection, and a weakened heart, emphasizing that his long-term health problems were the primary cause of his decline. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman also found no evidence of neglect in his care.

This case highlights ongoing discussions about the healthcare standards within the prison system, particularly for inmates with complex health needs. While the inquest ruled his death as natural, it raises awareness of the potential vulnerabilities faced by prisoners and the importance of adequate medical care in correctional facilities.
