Inquiry Launched into 2014 Flood Death of Seven-Year-Old

An inquiry has been announced into the tragic death of Zane Gbangbola, a seven-year-old boy who died during severe flooding in Chertsey, Surrey, in 2014. This inquiry follows years of campaigning by Zane’s parents, who dispute the findings of a previous inquest that attributed his death to carbon monoxide poisoning. They believe he was killed by toxic gas from a nearby landfill site, raising significant concerns about environmental safety and public health protocols during flooding events.

The inquiry will examine the actions of public services during the floods and how they responded to the incident. It aims to uncover any failures in communication and coordination that may have contributed to Zane’s death. Additionally, it will assess the treatment of his family in the aftermath, highlighting the emotional toll on those left behind.

Dr. Sandie Okoro OBE has been appointed to lead the inquiry, which is non-statutory and does not compel witnesses to testify. However, it represents a crucial step towards accountability and may influence future policies regarding flood management and environmental safety in the UK.

As the inquiry progresses, it could lead to significant changes in how authorities handle similar emergencies, potentially preventing future tragedies. The family’s relentless pursuit of justice underscores the importance of transparency and support for those affected by such disasters.
