As these species proliferate, traditional fishing communities face economic challenges, losing access to indigenous fish populations that have sustained them for generations.
Scientists warn that the Mediterranean is a climate change “hot spot,” with temperatures projected to rise by up to 6 degrees Celsius by 2100. This warming is exacerbated by the sea’s enclosed nature, preventing heat dissipation. The consequences are dire: local biodiversity is diminishing, with reports indicating a 93% loss in mollusk populations in some areas, leading to a stark decline in species that local fishers rely on.
The spread of invasive species has already been felt in places like Cyprus, where local fish stocks have been supplanted. Fishers are now grappling with the dual challenge of adapting to new species while also facing the potential health risks posed by toxic invaders. Efforts to mitigate these impacts include commercialising edible invasive species and enforcing international treaties to manage ballast water in ships, which can transport these species.
While reversing the spread of these invaders may be impossible, experts suggest that proactive measures can help restore balance. Adjusting fishing policies to protect native species and employing technologies to prevent further invasions are crucial steps. The future of the Mediterranean’s marine environment hinges on collective action to address these urgent challenges.
