Invest NI’s New Leadership Aims to Bridge Regional Gaps

Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) is under scrutiny as it seeks to rebuild trust following criticisms of regional investment disparities. Aeidin McCarter, the new head for the north west, acknowledges past mistakes and emphasizes a commitment to regional balance. The organisation has faced backlash for favouring Belfast over Derry City and Strabane, where job creation and investment figures have lagged significantly behind the capital.

McCarter’s appointment comes after an independent review highlighted ‘profound divisions’ within Invest NI that hindered its effectiveness. The review prompted an action plan aimed at addressing these issues, with McCarter stating that regional needs will now be a priority in the organisation’s strategy. She insists that supporting local businesses is crucial, noting that 93% of Invest NI’s investments are directed towards indigenous firms.

Critics, including SDLP MLA Sinead McLaughlin, remain sceptical, pointing out that the majority of job creation continues to favour Belfast. McLaughlin has introduced a bill to the Stormont Assembly that would make addressing regional imbalances a government obligation. The upcoming vote could mark a significant shift in how regional equity is approached in Northern Ireland.

As McCarter steps into her role, she aims to ensure that the north west receives its fair share of investment and support. Her belief in the potential for change reflects a broader hope that Invest NI can evolve to better serve all regions, particularly those historically overlooked. The effectiveness of these changes will be closely monitored in the coming years.
