The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation following the death of a 52-year-old man while in police custody. This incident occurred after the man was arrested in Croydon for failing to attend court on charges of being drunk and disorderly.
After his arrest, he was taken to the Windmill Road custody suite, where he later became unwell. Officers found him unresponsive during routine cell checks and attempted to provide first aid. Despite the arrival of paramedics, he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the man had undergone assessments by healthcare professionals and received welfare checks while in custody. This tragic event has raised questions about the protocols in place for monitoring the health of individuals detained by police.
The IOPC’s investigation aims to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death, highlighting the importance of accountability in police practices and the treatment of individuals in custody. The outcome may influence future policies regarding health assessments in detention facilities.
