A significant flooding incident in Gwaelod-y-Garth, near Cardiff, has prompted First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth to demand answers following a quarry blast. The flooding affected 15 properties, leading to the evacuation of 13 homes and causing extensive road closures due to debris. Residents reported water levels reaching up to 5ft deep, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The First Minister visited the affected area, assuring residents that a thorough investigation would be conducted to understand the cause of the flooding. He emphasised the need for lessons to be learned to prevent future occurrences, noting that this flooding was unlike typical events seen in the region.

The Breedon Group, which owns Taff’s Well quarry, has pledged to cooperate with authorities and conduct its own investigation. Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Executive is collaborating with South Wales Police to examine the incident, raising concerns about potential long-term impacts on the community and environment.

Residents are receiving assistance, including temporary housing, as clean-up operations continue. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities communities face from industrial activities and the need for robust safety measures to protect local populations.
