Major Investment to Complete A9 Dualling by 2035

Transport Scotland has announced contracts worth nearly £2 billion to complete the dualling of the A9, a crucial route between Inverness and Perth. This project, which has faced delays, is now set to be completed by 2035, with significant sections expected to be finished by 2030. The first contracts will focus on the Dalraddy to Slochd section, which includes upgrading three junctions, enhancing safety and traffic flow.

The decision to fund the remaining sections from the Scottish government’s capital budget, rather than through public-private partnerships, marks a shift in approach. This could streamline the process and ensure that funding is available without the complexities of private investment. The total cost of the A9 dualling project is estimated at £3 billion, reflecting its importance to regional connectivity and economic growth.

This investment not only aims to improve travel times and safety but also supports local jobs in the construction sector. As firms begin bidding for these contracts, the economic ripple effect could be significant, potentially boosting local economies along the route. The commitment to complete the dualling by 2035 also signals a long-term vision for infrastructure development in Scotland.

As the project progresses, it will be crucial for stakeholders to monitor the impacts on traffic patterns and local communities. The A9 is a vital artery for both residents and businesses, and its enhancement is expected to facilitate better access to services and opportunities across the Highlands and Islands region.
