Irish PM’s Jet Lacks Key Technology, Raising Safety Concerns

Ireland’s decision to exclude the FalconEye landing assistance system from its new government jet has significant implications for safety. The €53 million Dassault Falcon 6X, intended for transporting the Taoiseach and ministers, will struggle to land in poor weather conditions without this advanced technology. The FalconEye system, manufactured by Israeli firm Elbit Systems, enhances visibility during foggy landings, a crucial capability that the aircraft will now lack.

This procurement choice stems from Ireland’s policy against purchasing Israeli-made components, which has led to a contradiction in its military acquisitions. While the government jet will operate without FalconEye, other military aircraft recently acquired still incorporate Israeli technology. This inconsistency raises questions about the effectiveness of Ireland’s procurement strategy and its commitment to the ban.

Former Irish Air Corps pilot Kevin Phipps highlighted the operational risks, noting that without FalconEye, the jet may need to divert to alternative airports during adverse weather. Although the Department of Defence claims the jet remains functional, the absence of this safety feature could lead to operational challenges, particularly for long-range medical evacuations.

As the Falcon 6X enters service, the implications of this decision will become clearer. The lack of advanced landing technology not only affects the aircraft’s operational capabilities but also reflects a broader tension in Ireland’s defence policy, balancing safety with political commitments.
