Irish Politicians Demand Action on German Trial of Pro-Palestinian Activists

A group of Irish politicians is urging the government to take a stand on the treatment of Daniel Tatlow-Devally, an Irish citizen facing trial in Germany alongside four other pro-Palestinian activists. They are accused of causing significant damage during a protest against an Israeli arms company. The delegation, which includes members from various parties, has expressed concern over Tatlow-Devally’s harsh prison conditions, where he spends 23 hours a day in a small cell with limited visitation rights.

The trial, known as the Ulm 5 case, has raised alarms about the defendants’ ability to communicate with their lawyers effectively, as they are kept behind a glass barrier in court. This setup has led to claims that their right to a fair trial is compromised. The Irish delegation is advocating for the government to send observers to the trial and to address these concerns with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his upcoming visit.

The activists argue that their actions were motivated by humanitarian concerns regarding Germany’s arms support to Israel, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Their case highlights the broader implications of international solidarity movements and the legal challenges faced by activists in Europe.

As the trial progresses, the Irish delegation plans to maintain pressure on the German authorities, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in the judicial process. They aim to return to Germany before the trial concludes, ensuring that the treatment of Tatlow-Devally and his co-defendants remains in the spotlight.
