Israel Approves International Stabilisation Force for Gaza

The Israeli government has given the green light for an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) to operate in Gaza, a significant move that could reshape the region’s dynamics. This force, comprising personnel from ‘friendly countries’ like Uganda and Morocco, will function in areas outside of Israel’s military control, marking a shift in how international involvement is structured in the ongoing conflict.

This decision comes amid a backdrop of continued violence, with reports indicating that over 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since a ceasefire was agreed upon in October. The ISF’s deployment is part of a broader peace plan proposed by former President Donald Trump, which includes provisions for demilitarisation and the establishment of a Palestinian governing body.

The implications of this move are profound. By allowing the ISF to operate, Israel is effectively relinquishing some control over Gaza, albeit selectively, as it retains the authority to approve which countries can contribute forces. This could lead to a gradual shift in power dynamics, potentially opening avenues for more substantial international engagement in the region.

As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares for discussions in Washington, the timing of this announcement suggests a strategic alignment with U.S. interests in stabilising Gaza. The long-term effects on Palestinian governance and Israeli security will be closely monitored, as the ISF’s presence could either foster peace or exacerbate tensions, depending on its execution and local reception.
