Jet fuel supply concerns: What UK travellers need to know

Airlines globally have cut 13,000 flights in May due to soaring jet fuel prices, primarily linked to the conflict in the Middle East. However, UK officials are reassuring travellers that there is currently no jet fuel shortage in the UK, and contingency plans are in place to ensure flights operate as scheduled.

Despite the global flight cancellations, UK airlines are largely unaffected, as they purchase jet fuel in advance and maintain sufficient stocks. The Department for Transport has stated that there is no need for holidaymakers to alter their travel plans, emphasising that UK airlines are prepared for the summer season without significant disruptions.

For UK travellers, this means that while some airlines may raise ticket prices due to increased fuel costs, the immediate risk of flight cancellations due to fuel shortages is minimal. Those with upcoming travel plans can proceed with confidence, knowing their rights are protected if cancellations do occur.

Looking ahead, travellers should stay informed about any potential changes in flight schedules, especially as the summer season approaches. Monitoring airline communications and government travel advice will be crucial as the situation evolves, particularly if geopolitical tensions continue to impact fuel supplies.
