Job Cuts at Ferguson Marine Raise Concerns for Scottish Shipbuilding

Ferguson Marine, Scotland’s last state-owned shipyard, is set to cut nearly a quarter of its workforce, losing 70 of its 283 staff through voluntary redundancy. This decision comes as the yard awaits confirmation of new orders from the Scottish government, which promised contracts for four smaller vessels but has not yet delivered.

The job cuts, while aimed at ensuring the shipyard’s long-term viability, have been met with criticism from unions, who view them as a betrayal of a skilled workforce. The yard has recently completed two long-delayed ferries but now faces a gap in orders, raising fears about its future and the broader implications for the Clyde’s shipbuilding industry.

Ferguson Marine’s CEO has stated that these measures are necessary to maintain competitiveness and prepare for future contracts. However, even if new contracts are awarded soon, significant time will be required for design work before production can resume, leaving the yard in a precarious position.

The Scottish government has committed to supporting the shipyard’s modernization efforts, but the delay in contract confirmations has left many workers uncertain about their futures. The situation highlights the vulnerability of the shipbuilding sector in Scotland and the challenges faced in reviving its former glory.
