Join the Fight Against Plastic Pollution: Beach Clean Initiative Launched

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is calling on the public to participate in the Great British Beach Clean, running from September 18 to 27. This initiative comes in response to a significant increase in plastic pollution, particularly after a record-breaking summer that saw millions visiting the coast. Volunteers will not only clean up litter but also document their findings, contributing to MCS’s long-term dataset on marine litter, which has been tracking this issue since 1994.

The data collected during this year’s clean will help determine if the surge in visitors led to more litter being left on UK beaches. Last year, volunteers found an alarming average of 105 plastic items for every 100 meters surveyed. The MCS has noted a decrease in plastic bag litter due to previous policy changes, but the rise in fast-food containers and polystyrene highlights ongoing challenges.

Catherine Gemmell from MCS emphasised the need for stronger policies to combat single-use plastics. The charity is advocating for a nationwide deposit return scheme for drinks containers, set to launch in October 2027, which aims to incentivise recycling and reduce waste.

As microplastics continue to threaten marine life, the MCS is urging for immediate action to curb plastic production and enhance regulations on single-use items. This beach clean is not just about cleaning; it’s a call to action for more sustainable practices and policies to protect our coastlines and marine ecosystems.
