Kenyan Protests Highlight Urgent Need to Address Femicide Crisis

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Nairobi, demanding urgent government action to combat rising femicide and gender-based violence. Organised by the End Femicide movement, the demonstration was sparked by the tragic murder of gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, whose brutal death has become a rallying cry for change. The protesters, many dressed in white and carrying red roses, called for the government to declare gender-based violence a national crisis within 40 days, or face further protests.

The march highlighted a growing frustration with the government’s perceived inaction. Advocacy groups report alarming statistics, with approximately 70 cases of gender-based violence reported weekly and over 10,500 child protection cases recorded in just over a year. The protesters are demanding not only stronger protections but also faster investigations and harsher penalties for offenders, reflecting a deep-seated urgency for systemic change.

In response to the mounting pressure, authorities have announced the formation of a dedicated investigative unit aimed at tackling these issues more effectively. However, many activists remain sceptical, questioning whether this initiative will lead to meaningful change or simply serve as a temporary measure to quell public outrage.

As the deadline approaches, the situation remains tense, with the potential for widespread protests if the government fails to act. The outcome of this movement could significantly impact the future of women’s rights and safety in Kenya, making it a critical moment for both the government and its citizens.
