Khan Challenges Westminster’s Nightlife Restrictions

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has strongly opposed new licensing rules proposed by Westminster City Council that would limit the operating hours of pubs and nightclubs in the West End. The council’s plan suggests that newly licensed establishments should serve last orders by 10pm and close nightclubs by midnight on weekends, which Khan describes as ‘illogical’ and detrimental to London’s vibrant nightlife.

Khan argues that these restrictions undermine the economic contributions of the nightlife sector, which supports over 630,000 jobs and generates more than £21 billion annually. He believes that the proposed measures cater to a small group of residents while ignoring the broader cultural and economic benefits of a thriving nightlife.

The mayor has called for the council to abandon its ‘cumulative impact zone’ designation, which complicates the approval process for new venues. He cites Manchester as a successful example of a city that has embraced a more flexible approach to nightlife licensing, allowing for greater economic growth and community engagement.

As the council prepares to consult with City Hall under new powers granted to Khan, the outcome of this dispute could significantly shape the future of London’s nightlife, impacting everything from local economies to cultural vibrancy in the capital.
