Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has urged the United States to continue its support for Lebanon, particularly in light of a recent agreement with Israel aimed at stabilising the region. This call comes as Lebanon grapples with ongoing conflicts and the significant presence of Hezbollah, which has rejected the framework deal that seeks to disarm the group and facilitate an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
The agreement, mediated by the US, is seen as a pivotal moment for Lebanon, potentially allowing the Lebanese army to regain control over southern territories. However, Hezbollah’s opposition raises concerns about the deal’s viability and the future of peace in the region. The ongoing violence has already resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread displacement, complicating the humanitarian situation.
Aoun’s message coincides with US Independence Day, highlighting the historical ties between the two nations. The US Embassy in Lebanon echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in supporting the Lebanese people as they strive for a more peaceful future. Yet, the lack of a clear timeline for disarmament and withdrawal from Hezbollah remains a significant hurdle.
As Lebanon seeks to turn a new page, the international community’s role, particularly that of the US, will be crucial in determining whether stability can be achieved or if the cycle of conflict will continue. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further escalation if diplomatic efforts falter.
