Life Expectancy Divide: North-South Disparities Widen in England

A recent report by the King’s Fund highlights a troubling trend in England’s life expectancy, revealing that the gap between the north and south has widened significantly over the past decade. While overall life expectancy has reached record highs, with men living an average of 80 years and women nearly 84, these gains are predominantly seen in southern regions. In stark contrast, many northern areas have seen stagnation or even declines in life expectancy, exacerbated by higher rates of illnesses and socio-economic challenges.

The report indicates that individuals in the north are facing increased health issues, including heart disease, cancer, and mental health crises linked to substance misuse. This disparity is not just a health issue; it reflects broader socio-economic inequalities that have persisted despite government initiatives aimed at ‘levelling up’ the regions. The findings suggest that without addressing the underlying determinants of health—such as job security, housing quality, and access to nutritious food—the gap will continue to grow.

Moreover, the King’s Fund warns that the government’s ambitious 10-year health plan to improve healthy life expectancy may be unrealistic, given the current trajectory. The plan aims to halve the gap between the richest and poorest, yet the report shows that healthy life expectancy has declined across all regions, with the most deprived areas experiencing the most significant setbacks.

As the health of working-age adults declines, the implications for the economy and society are profound. Increased economic inactivity due to health issues could hinder future generations, making it imperative for policymakers to prioritise public health and preventive measures. The challenge remains not only to improve healthcare access but also to tackle the root causes of health disparities across the country.
