Lithuania’s Social Democrats have formed a new coalition with the Democrats ‘For Lithuania’ and the Farmers and Greens Union, marking their third coalition in just over a year. This new alliance holds a slim majority in parliament, with a commitment to allocate at least 5% of GDP towards defence, enhancing air threat detection and cybersecurity.
The coalition aims to resolve internal disputes privately, a shift from previous public disagreements that have characterised Lithuanian politics. Additionally, they plan to normalise diplomatic relations with China, aligning with other EU nations, which could open new avenues for trade and cooperation.
The coalition’s stability is uncertain, as leaders acknowledge the challenges ahead. Ministerial roles are yet to be confirmed, but the Social Democrats will retain key ministries, including defence and foreign affairs. This restructuring comes after the removal of the populist Dawn of Nemunas party, indicating a move towards more centrist governance.
As Lithuania navigates these political changes, the focus on defence and social security reflects broader regional concerns, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions. The coalition’s success will depend on their ability to maintain unity and effectively address the pressing issues facing the nation.
