Living with Hepatitis B: A Personal Journey

At just eight years old, Supa Chantschool’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with hepatitis B, a chronic liver condition he contracted at birth. This diagnosis came unexpectedly during a routine travel vaccination appointment, leading to a series of medical visits that revealed the seriousness of his condition. While many adults clear the virus, children like Supa are at risk of becoming lifelong carriers, a fact that weighed heavily on him as he grew up.

Despite being asymptomatic, the emotional toll of living with hepatitis B was profound. Supa faced stigma and misconceptions from peers, leading to feelings of isolation and fear about his future. He often felt he had an ‘expiry date’ on his life, which affected his social interactions and choices, particularly during his teenage years. The lack of understanding about his condition made it difficult for him to connect with others, compounding his struggles.

A turning point came when Supa, during a university vaccination appointment, mentioned his lack of recent medical care. This led to a re-engagement with healthcare, where he learned that hepatitis B could be managed effectively. This newfound understanding allowed him to envision a normal life, challenging the fears that had previously dominated his thoughts.

Supa’s story highlights the importance of awareness and education about hepatitis B, especially as World Hepatitis Day approaches. With over 260,700 people affected in England, the need for testing and understanding is crucial to prevent severe health outcomes. Supa’s journey underscores that with proper management, individuals with hepatitis B can lead fulfilling lives, breaking the stigma surrounding the condition.
