Local Outrage Over Migrant Detention Centre Expansion in Gosport

Residents of Gosport are expressing deep frustration over plans to expand the Haslar Immigration Detention Centre from 150 to 600 beds. This significant increase is set to house illegal migrants and foreign criminals awaiting deportation, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. Homeowners report a decline in property values by as much as £25,000 since the announcement, leading many to feel trapped in their homes.

The expansion, which is being managed under the Crown Development scheme, has raised concerns about local governance and the lack of community input. Residents feel that the decision-making process is being taken out of their hands, with local MP Dame Caroline Dinenage advocating for more local control over planning decisions. The construction is expected to begin soon, with the first detainees arriving as early as spring 2027.

While the Home Office claims the development will create jobs and boost the local economy, many residents remain sceptical. They argue that the disruption caused by construction and the presence of a large detention centre will outweigh any potential economic benefits. The community impact assessment suggests that the project could generate 341 jobs, but locals are concerned about the long-term implications for their neighbourhood.

As the situation develops, the tension between local residents and government officials continues to grow. With construction set to begin shortly, the community is bracing for what they describe as a transformation of their town into a “hell on Earth.” The outcome of this expansion could have lasting effects on the social fabric and property market in Gosport.
