Lowering Speed Limits to Mitigate Rising Oil Prices from Iran Conflict

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has proposed capping speed limits in the UK to combat rising oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The suggested limits are 20mph in towns and cities and 60mph on motorways, aimed at reducing fuel demand and ultimately stabilising prices for consumers.

This recommendation comes as the conflict has already begun to affect global oil prices, with potential inflation rates in the UK projected to peak at 5.8% if no measures are taken. The IPPR argues that lowering speed limits would not only decrease fuel consumption but also promote safer streets, encouraging more walking and cycling.

For UK consumers, this could mean a dual benefit: reduced fuel costs and a potential easing of inflationary pressures. However, the proposed changes may also lead to increased scrutiny and debate over road safety and driving regulations, as seen in Wales where a similar speed limit was met with public resistance despite a decrease in road casualties.

Looking ahead, the government will need to assess the effectiveness of these measures in curbing inflation and stabilising the economy. Key indicators to watch include fuel price trends and any adjustments to speed regulations that may emerge from public and political response to the IPPR’s recommendations.
