New Maritime Defence Alliance Aims to Secure Key Trade Routes

Saudi Arabia has announced the formation of a Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance with 13 other nations, aimed at safeguarding vital waterways including the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. This coalition comes in response to escalating threats to maritime security, particularly from Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen, who have recently targeted shipping routes crucial for global oil transport.

The alliance seeks to enhance collective maritime defence cooperation, ensuring freedom of navigation through these strategic corridors that connect the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean. With approximately 10 to 12 percent of global maritime trade passing through the Bab al-Mandeb, any disruption could lead to significant increases in energy prices, affecting economies worldwide.

Notably, the alliance has not included the United Arab Emirates or Oman, despite their similar security concerns. This raises questions about the coalition’s effectiveness and the potential for differing strategies among Gulf states. The coalition’s activities will involve intelligence sharing, operational planning, and joint exercises, although specific contributions from member nations remain unclear.

As tensions in the region rise, the establishment of this alliance highlights the growing importance of maritime security in global trade and energy supply. The implications for UK businesses and consumers could be profound, particularly if energy prices surge due to instability in these critical waterways.
