Recent research reveals that Mars once had rivers of magma beneath its crust, suggesting a more complex geological history than previously thought. This finding, based on seismic data from NASA’s InSight Lander, indicates that molten rock pooled deep underground, potentially creating conditions suitable for life.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, challenges the long-held belief that Martian volcanoes were supported by isolated magma chambers. Instead, it proposes an interconnected system that could have facilitated the recycling of essential elements, necessary for developing an atmosphere and possibly oceans.
This discovery broadens the criteria for identifying potentially habitable rocky planets. Previously, planets without plate tectonics were often dismissed as uninhabitable, but the new insights suggest that such planets might still support life under different geological conditions.
