A New Maths Challenge: Can You Visualise the Fish Puzzle?

A unique puzzle has emerged, challenging participants to think in three dimensions. The scenario involves a fish swimming in a tank measuring two metres high, one metre across, and one metre deep. Participants are tasked with drawing the top view of the shortest path that corresponds to provided front and side views of the fish’s movement.

This puzzle, created by maths educator George Watkins, celebrates the opening of the 1729 Maths School in Mill Hill, London, which is the first specialist maths secondary school in the UK. The school’s name is inspired by a famous anecdote involving a London taxi cab.

The challenge not only tests spatial reasoning but also highlights the importance of visualisation skills in mathematics, which are crucial for fields like architecture and engineering. Architects, in particular, are trained to think in three dimensions, making them well-suited to tackle such puzzles.

As the school welcomes its first pupils, this puzzle serves as a fun introduction to the kind of thinking that will be encouraged there. Engaging with such challenges can enhance problem-solving skills and foster a deeper appreciation for mathematics in everyday life.
