Sir Ken McCallum, director general of MI5, has highlighted the pressing need for the UK to adapt to evolving security threats, 25 years after the 9/11 attacks. He described the current landscape as facing the ‘worst of both worlds’, with traditional threats resurfacing alongside complex new challenges. This duality requires a collective national effort to enhance resilience against both state and non-state actors.

McCallum stressed that security is no longer solely the responsibility of government agencies but increasingly involves private sector assets and systems. Recent attacks on synagogues illustrate how vulnerabilities have shifted, necessitating a broader approach to national security that includes various stakeholders.

The director general also reflected on the historical context, noting that while al Qaeda’s capabilities have diminished since 2001, new threats have emerged. The landscape is now characterized by a mix of old dangers and new, requiring constant adaptation and vigilance.

As the UK marks this significant anniversary, McCallum’s message underscores the importance of preparation and resilience, reminding us that the horrors of 9/11 remain a pivotal part of the national consciousness, shaping the future of security in Britain.
