New Missile Production in Germany: Implications for Defence Strategy

Covenant, a US defence contractor, plans to establish a medium-range missile production facility near Leipzig by 2027, potentially producing up to 1,000 missiles annually. This development is significant as it aligns with Germany’s increasing focus on enhancing its military capabilities, particularly in long-range strike options. The missiles, expected to have a range exceeding 1,500 kilometres, could provide Germany with a cost-effective alternative to existing systems like the Tomahawk, which is considerably more expensive.

The move also reflects a strategic shift in Germany’s defence policy, aiming to reduce reliance on US military supplies. By sourcing components locally and establishing production lines in Europe, Germany could enhance its self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing. This could lead to a more robust European defence industry, fostering collaboration among EU nations and potentially altering the dynamics of transatlantic defence relationships.

Covenant’s plans come amid a backdrop of heightened security concerns in Europe, making the development of indigenous missile capabilities more pressing. The German Ministry of Defence has already expressed interest in these missiles, indicating a potential procurement that could reshape Germany’s military posture.

As Covenant is a relatively new player in the arms industry, its entry into the European market could disrupt existing supply chains and introduce new competition. The implications of this production facility extend beyond Germany, potentially influencing NATO’s collective defence strategies and the broader geopolitical landscape in Europe.
