Martina Rydout and her daughter Anita have completed the Belfast Half Marathon, marking a significant milestone in their lives. Anita, who has autism and additional needs, finished the 13.1-mile race alongside her mother and friends, a journey that began a decade ago with a simple parkrun. Their achievement is not just personal; it demonstrates the power of community support in helping individuals with additional needs to thrive.

The emotional day was made even more meaningful as the duo raised over £4,500 for charities that support young people with additional needs. The Live Life Wellbeing Centre and Sensibility NI, the beneficiaries of their fundraising, play crucial roles in aiding families and enhancing the lives of those with similar challenges. This accomplishment showcases how sports can foster inclusion and community spirit.

Anita’s journey from a bleak prognosis at age four to completing a half marathon is an inspiring testament to resilience. Her running group has been instrumental in their preparation, illustrating how shared goals can unite and empower individuals. The event attracted thousands of participants, further highlighting the growing culture of running in Belfast.

In the competitive races, Stephen McAuley and Judith Storm emerged as winners, but for Martina and Anita, the true victory lies in their shared experience and the awareness they’ve raised about the capabilities of individuals with additional needs. Their story encourages others to embrace challenges and support one another in achieving remarkable feats.
