Courtney Gartshore, a 28-year-old mother from Peterhead, has been sentenced to six years in prison for the culpable homicide of her three-month-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose. The tragic incident occurred on September 30, 2023, when Gartshore inflicted severe burns on the infant using a hairdryer. Emergency services found Dahlia-Rose unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at the scene due to a combination of heat stroke and hypothermia.

The case has raised significant concerns about parental responsibility and the protection of vulnerable children. During the trial, it was revealed that Gartshore had been consuming alcohol while caring for her daughter, leading to a gross breach of her parental duties. The prosecution successfully argued that the burns, covering 18% of Dahlia-Rose’s body, were inflicted over a sustained period, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Judge Simon Collins KC described the case as “uniquely disturbing,” emphasizing the need for society to protect defenseless children. The jury rejected the defense’s claim that the child may have been deceased before the burns were inflicted, demonstrating the court’s commitment to holding parents accountable for their actions.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by children and the critical importance of safeguarding measures. As the community grapples with the implications of this tragedy, it underscores the need for increased awareness and support for families in distress.
