MPs Defend Economic Forecaster Amid Calls for Reform

Members of the Treasury committee have come to the defence of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), rejecting calls for its fundamental reform. They argue that criticisms from across the political spectrum are akin to ‘shooting the messenger’ when it comes to the OBR’s economic forecasts. The committee emphasised that the OBR should not be blamed for difficult government decisions stemming from tight public finances.

The MPs suggested that the OBR could enhance its role by adopting a 10-year economic forecast, which would complement its existing five- and 50-year forecasts. This change aims to provide a broader perspective on long-term economic trends and risks, which could influence future policy decisions.

Critics have accused the OBR of wielding excessive power over fiscal policy, suggesting its forecasts dictate government spending limits. However, the committee’s review found no evidence to support this claim, asserting that the OBR’s role is to provide independent analysis rather than to control fiscal policy.

As the UK faces ongoing economic challenges, the committee chair highlighted the importance of preserving the OBR’s independent voice in economic discussions. This is seen as crucial for fostering a more informed debate on the long-term impacts of government policies and breaking the cycle of short-term thinking that hampers economic progress.
