Nepal Faces Energy Crisis as India Steps In with Electricity Supply

Following devastating floods that severely damaged Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure, India has stepped in to provide crucial electricity support. Starting immediately, India will supply up to 654 megawatts of electricity daily for 18 hours, helping Nepal cope with its urgent energy needs. This move not only addresses immediate shortages but also reinforces the longstanding energy cooperation between the two nations.

The floods, triggered by a glacial collapse, have resulted in significant loss of life and property, with over 1,400 fatalities reported and many more missing. Nepal, which previously exported surplus energy to India, now finds itself in a position of dependency, highlighting the dramatic shift in its energy landscape following the disaster.

As thousands of displaced individuals seek shelter in aid centres, the economic implications of this crisis are profound. The Nepali government estimates that at least $5 billion will be needed for initial rebuilding efforts. This situation underscores the vulnerabilities of countries like Nepal to climate change, which is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of such natural disasters.

Looking ahead, the ongoing energy supply from India will be reviewed in December, raising questions about Nepal’s long-term energy strategy and its reliance on external support. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of regional energy security and the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the face of climate challenges.
