NHS Apology Highlights Failures in Supporting Adult Survivors of Child Abuse

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has issued a public apology for decades of mismanagement in treating adults who were sexually abused as children. This acknowledgment comes as many victims report feeling let down by the NHS when seeking mental health support later in life. Experts argue that the focus has often been on treating symptoms rather than addressing the underlying trauma, leading to further distress for survivors.

One significant issue is the limited time mental health professionals can spend with patients, often resulting in inadequate care. Many survivors struggle to disclose their abuse, with estimates suggesting that two-thirds of those affected do not seek help until adulthood. This delay complicates their treatment, as mental health staff may not connect their symptoms to past trauma.

The report emphasizes the need for better training and investment in mental health services to provide trauma-informed care. Survivors like Caroline Thompson have shared their experiences of being misdiagnosed and inadequately supported, highlighting the urgent need for systemic changes within the NHS.

The college’s call for mandatory training and national guidelines aims to ensure that mental health services can effectively support survivors. This initiative is crucial as it seeks to transform how the NHS addresses the complex needs of those affected by childhood abuse, ultimately aiming for a more compassionate and understanding approach to care.
